MARINE SAFETY TRAINING INFORMATION

Auxiliary members wanting to pursue or obtain Marine Safety qualifications must check the pre-required courses and steps prior to begin their advancements. Start by studying the Marine Safety courses designed to provide a baseline level of training.

—Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP)

—ICS 100, 200, 210 or 300, 700, 800

—Favorable DO PSI if required by COTP/OCMI. Except AUX-MSAM and AUX-MEES

—PQS Workbook

—Unit level oral board.

—Designation Letter submitted for approval.

Members need TCT Initial (Introduction to Risk Management course) and TCT Refresher for maintaining certain Marine Safety Qualifications***

This course was developed by the Ocean Conservancy and is designed to encourage ocean and waterway conservation by boaters. The course material is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center.

Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP)
This course is designed to provide an extensive background in the history, policies, laws and regulations pertaining to the Marine Safety and Environmental Protection missions. It is the Auxiliary equivalent of the 12-week Coast Guard Marine Science Technician A-School. The course is available on this website by clicking on the link above. The exam is available on the National Testing Center.

National Testing Center (IMSEP Test) This course counts as 2 points toward the AUXOP device.

Qualifications Earned Via the Auxiliary

New requirements to earn the AUX-MSAM qualification takes effect on April 1, 2023.

The Marine Safety and Administrative Management Specialist is a Marine Safety Performance Qualification Standard (PQS).

This PQS is just one of the many Marine PQS that Auxiliary members can work towards qualification in.

Qualification requires having successfully completed several prerequisites, as well as the completion of the PQS study, practical applications and passing an oral board examination.

—Good Mate Course

—ICS 100, 200, 210 or 300, 700, 800

—Complete 2 yrs. in either an auxiliary staff or elected office

—Complete one of the following: APC, LAMS, AUXMIN or AUXLEA course.

—Completion of PQS Workbook

—Successful completion of oral board

—Designation Letter submitted for approval.

After a member completes the all requirements, he/she should contact the DSO-MS to schedule the ORAL BOARD

AUX-MSAM

Auxiliary Prevention Outreach Specialist (AUX-MEES) is one of the 27 Performance Qualification Standards (PQSs) in the Trident Program.

Members must complete the following requirements prior to obtain the AUX-MEES qualification.

—Completion of resident training course – Sea Partners (optional) ∗

—Completion of correspondence courses: IMSEP and Good Mate

—Hazardous Materials: A Citizen’s Guide – FEMA IS5

—Hold Auxiliary IT qualification or complete CG Instructor Development course

—Successful completion of oral board

—Designation Letter submitted for approval.

After a member completes the all requirements, he/she should contact the DSO-MS to schedule the ORAL BOARD

Qualifications Earned Via the Active Duty Side

Auxiliary members must use the COLM prior to assist the USCG active duty with MS missions. Consult with your FSO-MS that will contact the MSU or MSD AUC.

PQS and qualifications done through Sector needs/training

The Marine Safety Training ribbon was created in recognition of the considerable and long-term, sustained effort that Auxiliarists must put forward in order to earn the Auxiliary Marine Safety (Trident) insignia. The ribbon recognizes achievement in the marine safety, security, and environmental protection mission area as a precursor to achievement of the Auxiliary Marine Safety (Trident) insignia. Auxiliarists who successfully complete the following tasks are entitled to wear this ribbon (there is no time limit in which these tasks must be completed):

(1) Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP)
course. If completed prior to 01 Oct 2010 must also complete IIMS. (IIMS was an active-duty course which has since been discontinued. If IIMS has not been completed and IMSEP was earned prior to 01 Oct 2010, the new version of IMSEP must be completed.)

(2) Good Mate course.

(3) Incident Command System (ICS) courses 100 / 200 / 700 / 800.

(4) ICS course 210 (Coast Guard taught) or ISC 300 (FEMA or Coast Guard taught).

(5) At least one Auxiliary marine safety program PQS. See MS PQS page for acceptable PQSs.

Successful completion of subsequent program PQS shall be denoted by adding 3/16-inch bronze stars. After earning the Auxiliary Marine Safety insignia, Auxiliarists shall remove this ribbon from wear.

The Auxiliary Marine Safety Professional (Trident) device is awarded in recognition of the dedication and professionalism of Auxiliarists involved in support of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety and Environmental Protection missions.
Auxiliarists who successfully complete the following tasks are entitled to wear the Auxiliary Marine Safety insignia (there is no time limit in which these tasks must be completed):

(a) Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection (IMSEP) course. If IMSEP was completed prior to 01 Oct 2010, Initial Indoctrination to Marine Safety (IIMS) must also be completed. (IIMS was an active-duty course which has since been discontinued. If IIMS has not been completed and IMSEP was earned prior to 01 Oct 2010, the new version of IMSEP must be completed.)

(b) Good Mate course.

(c) Incident Command System (ICS) courses 100/ 200/ 700/ 800.

(d) ICS course 210 (Coast Guard taught) or ISC 300 (FEMA taught).

(e) At least four Auxiliary marine safety program PQS.

(f) Perform at least 96 hours of program activity per year for at least five years (these years do not have to be consecutive).
